Hunting

Vegetarian: ancient Indian word for poor hunter. - From a bumper sticker

Hunting is one of the few things that we can do in modern times that really ties us directly to our ancestors. Add in some primitive weapons and you are a modern caveman. Being able to go out into the woods, track and harvest your game, and then feed your family are some of the most basic and essential skills of survival. Even if you are opposed to it - it is the hunting abilities of your ancestors that allowed you to be alive today.

While I am not a fan of hunting purely for sport or trophy hunting, I have no problem with those who are. Deer and wild hogs, the two primary animals I hunt in Texas, are both seriously overpopulated. In fact, every sport hunter in Texas could shoot their limit and we'd still need to be actively involved in conservation to make sure the herds were at a practical carrying capacity for the land.

Besides that - hunting is a great way for father and son to connect. It is a Texas tradition.

Ethical hunters are always conservation minded. In fact, President Teddy Roosevelt, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, also founded the National Parks service in order to preserve national lands for future generations.

Oakville

Our south Texas home away from home. Opening weekend has been a tradition for years and years - regardless of the weather.

Haun Ranch

Haun Ranch is a good place to go for a pretty well set-up hog hunt. The facilities are clean and the rates are low. One of the few places you can hunt and shoot.

Fall Creek Ranch

Fall Creek Vinyard is a Texas wine company with a hog problem - they love the grapes. It's a good place to hunt and even if you don't see anything, it's worth it just to drive your 4x4 over their long jeep trails.

Callaghan Ranch

Here is an article from Primtive Archer magazine about a bow hunt there.

In Praise of the Spear

Whether it is a fire-hardened wooden shaft, a well-knapped flint head, or an ultra-modern Cold Steel boar spear, the lure of the spear is undeniable. Quite possibly the second weapon of humans (the first being the rock), there is something decidedly primal about hunting with a spear.
